Stirrers: Not absolutely necessary if the batch size is 1 quart or under and the S.W.A.P. function is used.
[Batches over 1 quart aren't recommended even with a stirrer, but some people do it and get away with it ]
Both stirrers do the same thing using different physics. They move water.
The Thermal Convection Stirrer adds a bit of heat which increases the ability of water to hold ions in solution, but don't do all that well in jars over 8 inches tall..
The Magnetically Coupled Stirrer can move more water, up to a gallon.
